WELCOME

I am Kelsey Pinera and I am currently a graduate student in the Ecology and Evolution program through the Biological Department  at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I am a member of Dr. Jarrad Hampton-Marcell lab. For my research, I am interested in analyzing short chain fatty acid concentrations by measuring their dielectric potential in the gut. I intend to develop a swallowable sensor that is capable of mapping microbial metabolic activity in vivo.

My Journey

I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and attended the University of Mobile for my undergraduate studies. While there, I was a student-athlete as I was a member of the Women's Basketball team for 4 years. I graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. In the fall of 2023, I moved to Chicago to pursue my research interests as a Masters students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Outside of the Laboratory, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, coaching the game of basketball and also watching any kind of sporting event. I am passionate about mentoring young student athletes as well as fulfilling my research goals.
